Saul Bass on the Web

A personal homage to the great graphic designer Saul Bass, Saul Bass on the Web, which first appeared in 1998, was created for several reasons.

At the time there was no single resource about Saul Bass and his work, so I took it upon myself to throw together a site about this legendary designer, mainly focusing on his title sequence work. I also wanted a good subject to build something in Flash that wasn’t overtly “Flash like”. Back in 1998 there was a lot of Flash powered sites that seemed to be more about evangelizing the technology rather than using it to create compelling experiences online. For me the tech should be invisible in the background.

“This Bass homage site shows the maturation of Flash and RealPlayer technology: the plug-ins no longer call attention to themselves as technical tricks, but instead present moving graphics and film segments in an intuitive and entertaining way.” - Netsurfer Digest

So over time the site became talked and written about quite frequently. It was featured on the Apple site in an article by Joe Shepter, featured in several books and many websites. It even made it into the The Culture magazine of The Times. But all this love for the project didn’t stop my neglect. I had only a finite amount of time to spend on it, and I had kind of done what I needed to do with the site. That all culminated in forgetting to renew the domain (saulbass.com) - so the site disappeared for while.

Eventually after getting several emails every month asking about the site, I dusted the source files down, tidied a few things up and resurrected the site in May of 2006 at saulbass.tv

I still don’t have the time to update the site anymore, but I keep it alive as it still remains one of my much loved projects.
