Fascinated by your collection -have downloaded the squares to play with-eat your heart out Vassarelly and Albers.
Came looking for something simpler-I just want to make a set of objects move and stop when clicked on and for them to make a sound-each one a different sound-Have been trying to put sound into buttons and move them-It doesn’t work.

If you know where I could find a script for this I’d worship Ya
    Cheers
and congratulations again on an amazing site
By the by the link worked just after I emailed you that it didn’t.
    Now it really do not

    Hi there

Thanks for this great array of downloadable code. Just want to let you know that I realy appreciate it. It has been very inspirational to tour you site.

    Hi,

Thanks for the fascinating website and flash that you have created. I’m really impressed by your works. I was wondering if you could help me with something here.

I trying to create a panorama flash that can play when it is loaded and draggable using mouse. It looks something similar like the edward muybridge zoetrope that you have created but i trying to make it swing from one end to the other ( 0 degrees -> 180 degrees -> 0 degrees) and yet still draggable by the mouse.

Please guide me if you can. Appreciate your help. Thanks.

    Regards,
    Sito

This is just really a dumping ground for some old stuff that you may find interesting, useful, annoying or maybe even useless. You’ll find a whole load of stuff, from interface experiments and trig based graphic generators to weird sound toys and digital zoetropes.

    Lissajous Explorer

    view | source

Create circular Lissjous waves by moving your mouse left and right. Inspired by John Whitneys work for Saul Bass’ Vertigo titles. Download the source code and play around with the numbers to create other designs.

    passage of time

    view

Seconds blowing across the screen become faster and larger as the time marches forward to the next minute.

    video in and out

    view | source

Little demo of how to control IN and OUT points in Flash video. Source file contains many variations including proximity based and random cuts ups as well as dragging.

    proce55ing clock

    view

My first toy built with the brilliant proce55ing Java application. It’s a hack of some of the examples that come with it. A picture of little old me get’s rendered as digits that correspond to the current time. Over this are lines that are the length of the number of seconds left while the whole image gets bigger as the seconds tick. And you can spin it in a 3D space too!

    Sound Bubble

    view | source

Playing around with the mouse (Mac version). As the mouse disappears inside the bubble the sound loop changes in timbre. It’s like the mouse has ears or something!

    Sound 2 Vision

    view | source

Using the microphone object in Flash MX, graphics are placed on the screen controlled by the sound level picked up by the mic. The colour corresponds to the level of the sound as does the rotation and size. This has a lot of scope for sound generated graphics. Download the source code and have a play.

    video clock

    view

A quirky clock made from a video sequence I filmed around the office. Numbers were made from various objects including apples, pens, CD’s, waste paper bins etc. After I shot the sequence I then split each number up in After Effects and time stretched each one to be exactly 1 second long. Then put that into Flash MX and did the time calculation thing to control the video.

    mancini machini

    view

Using some music from Mancini’s ‘Experiment in Terror’, I’ve put together this little study into machine made soundtrack and typography. The longer the gap between the appearance of each letter, the larger the letter. The sound and type work together with the placement and rhythm to create some interesting random compositions.

    kooky circles

    view | source

Three basic circles that interact visually in different ways depending on the size and placement to each other.

    random blocks

    view | source

Just a cool transition effect using 12 squares. Play around with the settings to create a different feel, even make a grid by playing around with the size of the boxes.

    rockafella schmockafella

    view | source

Some rollover expermentation, both using the same core script with some bits of alteration here and there. Just by altering a few numbers in the code conveys different feelings with the rollover.

    typobox

    view | source

Typographic bees jump around in a box which you can enlarge or shrink depending on how you feel. Uses getBounds to constrain the movement of the letters.

    thomas crown sound blocks

    view | source

Inspired by the poster / title sequence for ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ (the original not the crap remake) by Pablo Ferro, this is just some dragging audio block type strangeness.

    skyscraper

    view | source

This isn’t quite right right yet, but it’s a sort of Mac OS X thing. Download the source and have a play around. Each ‘block’ comes from the one same movie clip, but they all work independently of one another.

    voodoo bren

    view

Make me shake my booty! Drag my various body parts around, then watch as those movements are played back exactly as you did them. A demonstration of a real-time animation capture engine type thing in Flash. No need for play, no need for record, just move and watch!

    typokeyboard

    view

Builds on the dynamic typography idea, this time a typographical typing machine - speed of typing also controls the way the letters are placed on the stage.

    typoclock

    view | source

A typographical digital clock. Using dynamic text fields and a few masks. Inspired by the beautiful work of Erik Natzke at natzke.com

    new york taxi ride

    view

The speed of the video clips is controlled by how far away the mouse is from the clip. Also controls volume, scale and alpha setting. All controlled from one master movie clip.

    sonic velocity

    view

The sound volume is controlled by how fast you drag the droid around the stage.

    proximity engine

    view | source

A simple movie clip that works out how far the mouse is away from the center of the clip and then controls alpha and scale. This example could be used for a portfolio / gallery etc.

    sonic satellite

    view

The nearer the ’sat’ comes to the center, the louder the volume. Went on to be the inspiration for the IdN splash screen for January 2001.

    spirographic

    view

Maths fun with a Spirograph twist. This code started out life as an After Effects motion math script, then got mangled into Flash 5 craziness.

    reverbatronomatic

    view

Experiment with reverb effects in Flash 5. There are no instructions, there is no reason for it, it’s just stupid audio fun. Play with sliders, explore, muck about! You know you want to. Be warned though - this thing is loud, so turn your speakers down, they might explode with the feedback! You have been warned.

    ripple menu

    view | source

A nice relaxing ripple menu effect, using a simple enertia algorithm with a twist of interference. Say hello, wave goodbye.

    mask slider

    view | source

Inspired by the beautiful John Mark Sorum website, this shows the cool sliding / gravity effect all done with Flash 5 scripting. The pictures slide in horizontally, vertically and diagonally, and you can choose from five different mask types. You can easily alter the speed of the slide in the source code.

    chomskyspace

    view | source

Builds on the 3D TypoSpace engine by Thomas Noller by adding sound. The volume of eight sound loops is controlled in 3D space, by rotating and spinning the various splines. Typography intergrates with the sounds to give visual clues to its volume. This example uses sound bites from Noam Chomsky. Political Typographic Interaction!

    clock experiments

    view | source

Experiments with Flash 5 to display time in various ways. Clock 1 is like a Swatch type thing, numbers rotating relative to the time, while clock 2 is a more digital alarm clock affair, creating echoes in time as time marches on. Clock 3 is a variation of 2, but with psychadelic colours generated by the seconds.

    computer arts live

    view | source

Contains source files for Flash 4 and Flash 5. The Flash 4 file shows how to make use of code to create a smooth fade rollover. The Flash 5 version builds on this and uses a smart clip with custom gui to control the rate of the fade as well as choosing a sound loop and picture for each button. Multiple buttons can be made from the same one movie clip.

    edward muybridge zoetrope

    view | source

This is a Flash version of the original Edward Muybridge Zoetrope. A single image strip gradually moves across the stage in relation to your mouse. The more you move your mouse right, the faster the strip goes until eventually you see a moving image. For the Flash heads, this uses duplicate movie clip to create an infinite strip. Download the Flash 4 source file and take a look.

    ilya executive toy

    view | source

A sort of Flash executive toy! Using the website logo, clicking on the red circles makes that circle shrink and all the other discs converge on it. Click on a yellow one and the opposite happens. What’s the point to it? Who knows, but it demonstrates some coding that Flash designers might be into!

    volume and pan

    view | source

Control the volume and pan at the same time in this Flash 5 movie. Shows how to dynamically attach a sound from the Flash library onto the stage, then control its volume and pan settings using a cross hair interface.
